De Pere Wins 2 in New Ulm
Panthers beat Rochester A's in Extras, 10-Run Sioux Falls in 6 innings.
Travis Mason's RBI single in the top of the eighth inning proved to be the game winner as De Pere beat the Rochester A's 4-3 in the opening game of the Upper Midwest Classic at Johnson Park in New Ulm, Minn.
Nick Pierre went 3 for 4 for the Panthers at the plate, while Joe Betcher improved to 3-0 on the season. Betcher went 7 innings while striking out nine and walking none. Tony Cantalupo picked up his 3rd save of the year pitching a perfect eighth inning.
In the second game, De Pere got 2 runs in the first inning and never looked back in an 11-1 victory over Sioux Falls West, S.D.
Josh Honzik (3-1) picked up the victory going all six innings and only scattering four hits.
Joe Vanden Avond went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's to lead the Panthers 14 hit attack.
State Rankings - Week 2
De Pere Remains Ranked # 1 in Class AAA
The De Pere Panthers Varsity Legion Baseball team showed up as the # 1 ranked team for the second straight week of the 2009 Wisconsin American Legion Baseball State Rankings.
De Pere received seven (7) out of seven possible first place votes. Central division rival Green Bay Southwest was the only other Division foe to be ranked at # 2.
